Brzezinski advocates an armed confrontation against Israel--to protect Iran! Has Brzezinski fallen off his rocker?
Zbigniew Brzezinski, National Security Advisor under President Carter, made headlines this week by asserting on Monday that if Israel flies an air strike to Iran’s nuclear facilities, that the US Air Force should intercept the attack as the jets fly over Iraqi airspace.
My first reaction to his statement was one of utter shock. After all, Brzezinski is highly respected on both ends of the political spectrum. As Carter’s Chief at the NSA, Brzezinski served as architect of the US-sponsored Counter-Soviet insurgency of the Mujahideen, which ultimately forced the Soviets out of Afghanistan after ten long years.
Now Brzezinski advocates an armed confrontation against Israel--to protect Iran! Has Brzezinski fallen off his rocker?
So I gave his statement a second consideration, and I now believe that Brzezinski’s strategy is one of utter genius.
Considering the outrageous, inflammatory, and delusional statements that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has made denying the Holocaust of World War II, there is no way that the world can tolerate a nuclear Iran. Ahmadinejad suffers declining popularity amongst a growing younger population in Iran. There are multiple groups inside Iran that are active in plotting violent overthrow of Ahmadinejad’s brutal regime. Ahmadinejad is quick to remind the Iranian people that the hated United States occupies states to both Iran’s borders, east and west. Whenever his position of power is threatened Ahmadinejad whips up his nation’s collective fear. Then Iranians quickly forget their discontent and rally behind him.
Toward the waning months of the Bush Presidency, Vice President Cheney floated a balloon as to whether our forces in Iraq should cross the border into Iran, or launch air strikes against nuclear targets. Such an attack might have neutralized the Iranian nuclear program, but would also have united the resolve of the Iranian people against the United States, further solidifying the power of the extremists.
Recall Reagan’s 1986 raid on Libya after a series of Libyan sponsored terrorist attacks against the United States. France, with one of the largest Moslem populations from its former colonies in North Africa, denied the United States airspace during the operation. From air bases in the United Kingdom, our F-111 long-range bombers flew around the continent of western Europe.
According to Doug Bandow, although France was outwardly non-compliant in the operation, behind the scenes French air controllers were instrumental in tracking our planes enroute and cleared the airspace of civilian traffic.
Brzezinski might have been advocating the same policy. As long as we occupy Iraq, there is no way Israel can attack Iran without Uncle Sam’s fingerprints all over the operation.
Could President Obama have whispered this “threat” into Brzezinski’s ear? Perhaps the intent of the statement was to signal a green light to Israel as long as the United States appears “hands off” to the operation. Israel instead attacks south over Saudi airspace, across the Persian Gulf.
This way the United States can have it both ways. We neutralize the Iranian nuclear threat. Israel does our dirty work. And after allowing the loathsome Israelis to humiliate him, Ahmadinejad grows weaker in the eyes of the Iranian public. Meanwhile, the United States is publicly outraged by the attack, and President Obama issues a public condemnation, all the while secretly throwing winks and congratulating Israel.
Simply brilliant.
